Who can forget that gut wrenching moment in 2016 when Christchurch Boys’ head prefect Jake Bailey told us to “be gallant, be great, be gracious.” Jake was speaking at his final prize-giving and was incredibly sick due to cancer treatment.
So young to be so wise. Not surprisingly, his words struck a chord with millions of people all over the world. Last time I checked, the speech had 1.7 million YouTube views.
Being great is truly an inspirational goal. And I don’t believe you can be great without being grateful.
So what are you grateful for today? I’m grateful for:
- my boys
- sea views
- strawberries in May
- impromptu natters with neighbours
- caramel scented candles
- wood stacked over summer
- homemade soup in the freezer
- an email from an old friend
Thanks Jake for your clarity of thought and courage. May your graciousness take you far.
PS The Common Touch, a documentary featuring Jake’s journey, has been released as part of this year’s DocEdge festival.
