Savouring Life

Savour is a word commonly associated with eating, drinking and moments directly related to the senses but pausing to fully experience the seemingly small pleasures in life is integral to mindfulness.

Savouring life is about appreciating the small moments that make up the myriad of moments in a day/week/month/year.

Everyone has crap moments. Disappointed child, rude workmate, botched interview, burnt tea… But it doesn’t pay to get hung up on the small things and let them define you.

A friend, who has endured more than her fair share of health challenges, said recently “there are people worse off than me.” There always are. Empathy is a fantastic trait but can be cumbersome when trying to process your crap. You only get to live (and experience) your life so it’s totally fine to feel your current situation sucks.

There’s an adage that you’re only dealt what you can deal with. I’ve pondered that sentiment many times and decided it’s a bit Machiavellian. Crap is crap. Being dealt crap is never good – no matter how “strong” you are or who how you deal with the challenges.

But I digress. Back to savouring …

I’m often struck by the unique light we enjoy at dusk in the Southern parts of New Zealand, by nor’ east swells, children laughing, a warm bed and rose gardens.

When everyone is on hyper drive/super busy/under pressure/time poor, it’s a big thing to step back, pause, and reflect on small things that make your heart sing. But if we don’t give some head space to these moments, then we have nothing to balance the crap moments with in our memories.

What really matters? Yes to good health, (top of the list). But aside from that; a warm home, food in the fridge, friends who visit, a satisfying “job” (paid or unpaid), a sense of connection with the community we live in.

If we can truly enjoy little things, we are better equipped to deal with life’s challenges. And I don’t know anyone¬†who hasn’t ever had to deal with crap, to lesser or greater degrees.

Here’s some simple moments I like to savour – I’d be keen to know yours!

  • My commute – views over the Taieri Plains and the Pacific Ocean to Taieri Mouth
  • Hugs from my husband – rib crushers that tell me he has my back – all day, every day
  • My children laughing – spontaneous, heartfelt, contagious
  • Watching our dog running on the beach – and how she runs back to tell me she’s happy
  • Sticky date pudding – Need I say more?
  • The smell of salted caramel
  • Jungle by Tash
  • The curtain opening on a live performance – Jimmy Barnes Working Class Boy. Visceral.
  • When my running app trainer enthusiastically says “Great job!” American accent and all.
  • Random acts of kindness – passing the parking ticket on, that kind of stuff.

  1. When my grandchildren were 6 and 4, we suggested that they savor opening their Christmas gifts. They thought that idea was hilarious. It has become a running joke with them, whenever anyone is rushing.”Let’s savor this!” I’m afraid they enjoy all of life too much to see our point of slowing down.
